2026 Hematology Laboratory Survey: The State of Blood Sample Review

Open

We surveyed 220 laboratory professionals – lab managers, technicians, hematologists, and hematopathologists – to understand the current state of blood sample review in hematology labs.

The findings reveal an industry under significant pressure: 89% of labs cite staffing shortages as a top challenge, 68% need 3-6 months to train new morphology staff, and nearly half still rely entirely on manual microscopy for PBS review.

Yet the data also shows where change is happening. Digital adoption nearly triples as laboratory volume increases, and 63% of professionals are cautiously optimistic about AI – waiting for proof, not opposed to change.

This report provides benchmarks on staffing, training, technology adoption, and AI readiness across hospital, reference, academic, and private laboratory settings.
