Dr. Ben-Zion Katz Presents the Multicenter Validation of Full-Field Digital Morphology for Peripheral Blood Smear Review

In this presentation from ISLH 2021, Dr. Ben-Zion Katz – Director of the Hematology Laboratory at a major academic medical center – shares the results of a multicenter study validating Scopio’s Full-Field digital morphology for peripheral blood smear review.

The study analyzed 645 peripheral blood smear samples across three clinical sites, comparing Scopio’s Full-Field Peripheral Blood Smear Application against manual microscopic analysis as the gold standard.

Key findings presented:

  • 60% improvement in workflow efficiency – Median review time of 7:46 minutes per case compared to 20:00 minutes for manual review.
  • WBC accuracy – 96.29% efficiency, 87.68% sensitivity, 97.62% specificity.
  • RBC morphology agreement – 99.77% correlation with manual microscopy.
  • Platelet estimation – 94.89% efficiency, 90.00% sensitivity, 96.28% specificity.

Dr. Katz concludes that the Full-Field approach showed a high degree of correlation with manual microscopy across all tested parameters – facilitating the long-expected separation between digital morphology and the manual microscope.
